Trevor relaxed when she agreed to have lunch with him. He couldn’t let her leave, especially after the way he’d treated her. He had to make it up to her. His protective instincts took over and he didn’t want her to be alone. But how could he tell her that?

They walked along the main street in town. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her shiver. “I think we should stop in a store and get you a warmer jacket.”

She gazed at him, her eyes wide. “I don’t think I can afford anything in these stores. At least not if I want to hang on to my money.”

“There are some affordable clothing stores around here. And I’m buying.” he said. His voice sounded more confident than he felt. He just couldn’t stand to see her freezing like that.

Rachel hesitated for a moment, her brows knit together. “Well, after what happened in

San Francisco, I think I’ll say ‘no’.”

“I know I acted like a jerk. I’m so sorry. I’m just so used to people taking advantage of me…”

She shook her head. “And you figured I’m just another gold digger. Thanks.”

“No, you are different. I mean, you’re not a gold digger. Far from it. You’re not like anyone I’ve ever met before.” He paused. “You’re amazing. I don’t want you to go. Not like this.” He swallowed the lump in his throat.

“Please, even if you decide you don’t want to have anything more to do with me, let me make it up to you. “

She hesitated. “I don’t know. You really hurt me. I can’t have a friendship with someone who’s just going to go nuts.”

“I’m really sorry.”

She nervously licked her lips. “I accept your apology.”

Trevor felt like a fifty-pound boulder had been dropped from his shoulders.

He gestured to street. “Are you ready?”

“Okay, I guess we could have a look.”

They walked into a promising looking store called “Bethany’s”.

Rachel looked bewildered as she observed all the clothing choices.

Trevor wasn’t anywhere near an expert in women’s clothing, but he saw a jacket that he thought would look good on her. He took it off the rack and was looking it over. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw her pick up a parka.

One of the salesladies came out from behind the counter and walked toward them.

Trevor saw her glance at Rachel looking her up and down and then rolled her eyes. The saleslady walked straight to Trevor, making him bristle. Just because Rachel didn’t look wealthy didn’t mean she couldn’t be waited on or paid attention to.

A fake smile plastered over the sales woman’s face. “Can I help you sir?”

“I don’t think so,” he said. Rachel watched him, her mouth dropping open. “Let’s go,” He motioned to Rachel.

Her mouth fell open, but she followed him out of the store. “What was that about?”

“I just was irritated that the saleslady walked right by you and ignored you.”

“Really? I guess I’m used to that, but thank you for being concerned.” A small smile played on her lips.
